History

There was a need for a Lutheran church in the growing town of Towson.

Nineteen people agreed to start a church and decided to meet in Happy Day Nursery on Dunkirk Road by 1941…just two weeks before Pearl Harbor!

In just six months…on Ascension Day, 1942 the congregation was formally organized. The congregation moved from the Nursery to a house on York Road and worship there for 8 years!

The current sanctuary was started in 1949 and by summer 1950, 800 people attended the completed building dedication.

In the 1960s the Ascension Nursery school started. The Education Wing was added. Refugee families were supported and civil rights became a growing concern.

In the 1980s the pipe organ was purchased and the front of the sanctuary remodeled.

In 1992 the narthex (lobby) was expanded and the Luther Room, elevator, new restrooms and downstairs rooms were added.

For over 60 years, Ascension has grown from a charter membership of 61 to over 1200 members and more than 400 families.

Today as it has always been, Ascension is “The Welcome Place” in Christ. Ascension rejoices in an ever-growing and changing family of faith and the Gospel that sustains us our daily lives with grace.
