Growing our Family’s Faith: A Parent Group
Dates: begins January 8, 2012
Facilitators: Pastor Judy Cobb, Fran Holman, Kelly Saraceno
Location: Great Hall
“Parent Group” gatherings are an opportunity for parents and grandparents to give and receive support for one another in the
important work of faith development within families. Expect lots of time for sharing and discussion.
January 8th – 22nd sessions will be led by Fran Holman. “Nurturing the Faith-Full Family” will involve emphasis on the home and what you can do with the kids that they will not necessarily get elsewhere: family prayer, storytelling, meals, gift giving, celebrating occasions and holidays. How can all these things happen within your home in the midst of a very different culture? What role do parents play? Do they have to be experts on the Bible and theology?
February sessions will be led by Kelly Saraceno. “Purposeful Parenting” will explore Christian family discipline.
Hospitality and Fellowship
Dates: beginning January 8, 2012
Location: Great Hall
Need a place to gather? We continue to offer our Hospitality. Stop by for good food, good conversation, and good fellowship. Food is provided by the committees and groups of Ascension. Have some free time? Need a place to meet others? Need coffee before heading to class?
Growing in Spirit
Dates: beginning January 8, 2012
Leaders: McKay Jenkins & Donna Mollenkopf
Location: Parlor
For six weeks, join a study of Tolstoy’s Spiritual Writings: In addition to being perhaps the world’s greatest novelist, Leo Tolstoy was (later in his career) a famous mystic, whose writings offer a profound interpretation of Christianity. His religious essays also had a direct and profound inspiration on spiritual thinkers around the world, including most famously, Gandhi, who considered Tolstoy a spiritual mentor. For more information, please contact McKay Jenkins.
Faith in Action: Our Neighbor’s Faith: Understanding Full communion Partners, the Roman Catholic and Orthodox Faiths
Dates: January 8 – February 19
Leader: Pastor Jim Cobb and Bruce Robertson
Location: Luther Room
Continuing the popular Fall topic, we will take a close up look at our “full communion partners”: Episcopal, Methodist, Presbyterian and United Church of Christ. We will ask “What makes someone a member of your church? And what difference has our full communion agreement meant in the life of your church?” Then, on Feb. 12 and 19, we will take a look at two of the most ancient and global churches, Roman Catholics and Orthodox.
