ELCA World Hunger

Ascension is involved in the Delaware-Maryland Synod Hunger Mission Force and supports the Evangelical Lutheran church in America World Hunger Appeal with offerings throughout the year. The Synod and Ascension designate Christ the King Sunday (the Sunday after Thanksgiving) as World Hunger Sunday, a day for special emphasis and offerings to the program.

Through the generosity of Marie Feldman, Ascension holds a Spring Festival each year. During the festival, world hunger activities and offerings are emphasized.

Ascension supports a program of the Lutheran World Federation in Jerusalem by purchasing Olive Oil from the Mount of Olives. Some of the oil is used in the Augusta Victoria Hospital kitchen. The rest of it is available in hand-blown bottles made by Palestinian artisans working in Hebron using recycled glass. Donations received for the olive oil all go to the Augusta Victoria Hospital, which provides a large amount of charity care. Bottles cost $25 each and make wonderful gifts.

As Synod Hunger Coordinator, Kathy Shaw is the contact for information about the World Hunger Appeal and olive oil purchases.
